Fisheries FAO

Speaker

Manuel Barange

Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy and Resources Division at the FAO

Manuel Barange, a biologist specialising in zoology and ecology, has become leading expert in fishery and aquaculture, in particular for the sustainable fisheries industries.

Prof. Barange defines himself as an ecologist and scientist specialising in the fishing industry. He works to ascertain and counteract the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems and resources, and the implications for humankind.

As director of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy and Resources Division, Prof. Barange is responsible for all technical issues relating to fisheries and aquaculture, including development and implementation policies. In the las few years he has led research into the development of quantitative tools to estimate the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems, their resources and their dependent communities at the global, regional and national levels.

As an expert in understanding the two-way relationship between environmental and societal change, he is called upon numerous institutions and he regularly speaks at international congresses about climate change, marine ecosystems and the future of the fishing industry.

Before joining the FAO, Barange served at many renowned fisheries academic institutions across the world, such as the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK), the Sea Fisheries Research Institute in Cape Town (South Africa) and the ICES Science Committee. Additionally, Prof. Barange holds an Honorary Professorship with the University of Exeter (UK) and in 2010 he was awarded the UNESCO-IOC Roger Revelle Medal for his accomplishments and contributions to ocean science.

His passion and close connection to the sea is such that one of his colleagues, the researcher E. Macpherson, has named a New Caledonian squat lobster in his honour – Munida Barangei.
