Pablo Martín-Sosa Rodríguez

Researcher and coordinator of the Marine Protected Areas Group at the Oceanographic Centre (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain)

Martín-Sosa primarily focuses on projects relating to the protection of biodiversity and the characterisation of new Marine Protected Areas.

He has been working at the Spanish Oceanography Institute's Canary Island Centre (CSIC-IEO), heading up the Marine Protected Areas research group, which is involved in many projects on Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest (MRFIs) in the Canary Islands, and their effect on stocks of commercial species and on fishing activities within these protected areas.

Martín-Sosa has designed, supervised and taken part in a large number of fishery assessment programmes, observation programmes aboard fishing vessels, biological sampling at landing locations, and for many years he has headed up the CSIC-IEO Information and Sampling Network at the main unloading points in the Canary Islands, for the purposes of monitoring their artisan fishing.

He was recently involved in the EU's ORFISH project for the development of innovative low-impact offshore fishing practices for small-scale vessels in the EU's outermost regions.
