Beyond conservation: a new future for the oceans

In many cases we take conservation action too late, but oceans can regenerate themselves.

In recent years, Alexandra has realised that conservation, the idea that we must protect what we have, is not enough. More than 50% of the oceans' natural blue capital has been lost. We have to do something more than just conservation. Exploration and scientific research have taught us that oceans are extraordinarily resilient, and if we recreate favourable conditions they can regenerate themselves.

We have the ability to reverse the acidification of oceans, regenerate dead areas, restore offshore seaweed forests and rebuild teeming fisheries and prosperous marine habitats. We can reverse the damage of years of insufficient environmental protection, with benefits for both people and the planet.
