The mesopelagic ecosystem, a little light in the darkness

Until a few years ago, mesopelagic fish, which live at depths between 200 and 1,000 metres, were considered unimportant for the functioning of the ecosystem.

However, recent studies have shown that their biomass can be up to ten times greater than that of all other fish, and that they play a significant role in carbon transport through their daily vertical migrations.

This abundance has sparked a debate about the possibility of developing mesopelagic fisheries.

In this talk, we will discuss the latest research on these fish, new techniques for studying them, and the associated costs and benefits.
